How To Make A Difference

With Project ICARUS there are 3 ways to make a difference:

      1. Make the commitment

We urge travel buyers, to sign up to the principles of ICARUS - to demonstrate to the supplier community that you are going to act!
Organisations which buy travel can make a public statement of commitment to reduce emissions from their business travel programmes and to gaining ICARUS accreditation.
To qualify for the commitment level, just send an e-mail with the following statement to ICARUS' Head of Sustainability, Bernard Harrop.

"We are committed to the long term reduction of absolute business travel emissions from our organisational activity and to seeking Project ICARUS accreditation"

Add your organisation's name to the growing list of companies who support the environmental goals of the project through the following statement:

Companies who have publicly stated their support for the project to date include...

The BBC, Carillion, Inmarsat, KPMG, HMRC, DEFRA, BP, Cranfield University, Atkins Limited and Ernst & Young

      2. Apply for buyer accreditation

There are 3 levels of accreditation:

Bronze:
Recognises those who have measured, targeted and created a strategy to reduce CO2 emissions from the air element of their travel programmes.

Silver:
Recognizes those who have achieved an absolute reduction in CO2 emissions from the air element of their travel programmes by at least 2.11 % per annum and are now rolling the programme out to two other travel categories.

Gold:
Recognizes those who have achieved an absolute reduction in CO2 emissions from the air, hotel, rail, ground transportation and business mileage elements of their travel programmes by at least double the minimum 2.11 % per annum (i.e. 4.22% per annum).

Accenture, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Barclays, SAS UK & Ireland and BT

      3. Enter The ICARUS Supplier Sustainability Awards

These are undertaken by submissions to the local advisory board and judged by a specially selected panel of environmental experts and academics.

The judges look for a serious commitment by companies to develop sustainable business practices. Evidence is sought in terms to leadership by senior management to their employees and engagement with stakeholder.

Companies ought to be using suitable metrics to measure the impact of their policies on their trading environment. Setting realistic but challenging targets to improve sustainability are key in driving change. Companies also need to monitor their performance to ensure that targets are being achieved.
